Man, today just wiped me right out. Talk about a hard work out!! Usually the workouts have been giving me energy, but today it just slammed me right into the ground. When the kids go down for naps, I plan to take one myself.
We got there today and the instructors were drenched with sweat. Granted, it's pretty humid out, but still. One instructor told us that today would be HARD. She almost threw up during the previous class. Niiice! Halfway through our class, she had to leave b/c she felt sick.
Now, I didn't throw up and no one in my class did. But I think it was b/c we were warned. It was definitely the worst so far.
Monday night we met with the dietitian. She's sooo nice. And funny. I love a dry sense of humor. I honestly wasn't sure what I would learn. I mean, eating healthy has been drilled into everyone's heads forever. But I learned some very helpful tips. She gave us a list of 100, 200 and 300 calorie snacks. I promptly put it on our fridge. I already have my favorites.
I've been keeping a food journal, too. I hate those. But I know that they really do work. If you eat it, you've gotta write it down... and you don't want to write that you downed a bag of chips! One of the instructors (same lady who almost puked, also co-owner) said to bring our journals with us each time for her to look at so she can give us tips. I dutifully brought mine today, but since she left early, she didn't get to look.
When I started bootcamp, I wasn't planning to change my food habits all that much. But I'm finding myself craving less junk. And by eating better, I feel better.
I have set a goal. 50 pounds. That's a crapload and who knows if I'll make it. But I really hope I do. For those of you playing along, no I will not tell you how much I weigh. ;-)
I've also set a reward for once I reach that goal. It's food that's TERRIBLE for you, yet oooooh so yummy! There's a place in town that y'all locals may know.. Guthries. Such a terrible place. But I'm gonna get myself a "gut box" (consisting of chicken fingers and fries and bread--i don't do the colesaw). It'll probably kill my stomach, but right now, that's the worst possible thing I can think of that I want!
OK, it's naptime.

Am I ready to go down that road?
As part of bootcamp, they offer dietary guidance for losing weight. On Monday evening, a dietitian (my personal trainer!) will meet with us to discuss how to eat properly.
With our materials package, included was a food journal with goals worksheet. The instructor has offered to help us keep on track my looking at how we eat and offer up suggestions. She's a very nice lady who truly wants everyone to be healthy.
I've been eating a lot better lately, but I know there's still room for a lot of improvement.
My issue is this... Do I take it one step at a time and focus on exercise right now? Or do I jump in completely and make the biggest life change I've ever made, next to children, of course.
I just don't know what to do. Ideally, I'd jump in 100%, but I'm so scared of failing.

"Does my fat ass make my ass look fat?"
I made it through the first week! Woo hoo!!!
I got there today and S. (who is a newbie, too) told me that when she got there, she saw 2 girls throwing up in the parking lot after they'd done the session before ours. Uhhhh. NICE! Totally scared us both!
It was our first day mixed in with those who have done bootcamp before. They tell us to divide up into groups of 4, newbies must mix in with the others. The girl next to me and I paired up, then another newbie and another not-newbie joined us. Scared that we'd get "in trouble" for having 2 newbies, I left the group. And I went to another... the "fat group". I mentioned them before, I think. It's an older man and his wife. And possibly their older son??? Not sure. All I know is, they canNOT run circles around me! The couple was very nice. The other guy was an ass. And lazy, interestingly enough. Which is why I think it might be their son.. They might be making him go. Not quite sure.
Anyway... we did circut stuff today. Six stations, 2 different things per station. One minute per thing at each station.
Station 1
a) Step over things... there was a platform and we had to step/step-jump over it.
b) With one of those band things attached to the wall and extended pretty far, we'd lean into it and pull back with our backs. (that makes NO sense, i know)
Station 2 - Kettlebells
a) Suitcase lifts. Pretend 2 kettlebells are 2 suitcases. Lift with legs.
b) Swings. Raise kettlebells, swing back between legs.
Station 3
a) Push ups. Five each of regular, diamond (making your hands in a shape of a diamond), and arms apart. Repeat.
b) Rope climbs. Laying on your back, grab rope in front of you and pull your entire body up to a standing position using only your arms. Then lower yourself back down. The first time I was only able to do it once. The second time, I got up 3 times! And boy do I have the rope burn to prove it!
Station 4
a) Bicycles. Lay on your back and bicycle your legs. Arms behind your head, make elbows touch knees as bicycling.
b) Superman! Back extensions. Laying on your stomach, act like you're flying like Superman.
Station 5
a) Steps and lunges. Step up, step down and lunge. Fun.
b) Firehose run/pull. Starts with the firehose in a pile. Take one in and hold it... Run until it is all pulled out. Then grab it and pull it all back to you. Repeat.
Station 6
a) Jumping Jacks (do I need to explain these?)
b) Ring curls. Using rings that are attached to the ceiling by rope, grab and pull out so you're standing at an angle. Do arm curls with your hands/rings meeting your forehead.
Repeat as long as time allows!
The Fat Group really wasn't that great. I was the most fit, which is kinda sad. OK, so maybe the husband and I were about the same. But still.. kudos to them!!
Looking forward to Monday!
Oh. And while it was very intense and it was hard... It wasn't puke worthy!

"you're gonna be hurtin' tomorrow"
I was so scared of today. And now I'm terrified of Friday. I think it's going to be an ongoing trend before each class because, as one of the quotes in the gym says, "yesterday was the easy day."
Today was TOUGH. And it was still just an intro day! From Friday on, we'll be with the rest of the class.
We worked with kettlebells today.

They're as horrible as they look, let me tell you. Thank goodness I'd been introduced to them before.
After our warm up, it began... First it was a set of squats and a set of lunges without the kettlebells. And then... then we added in those horrible things. Then we did these swing things incorporated with a squat. Squat down, and bring the kettlebell back, then stand up and bring it up shoulder high.
We did military presses with them... and a combination of arm curls, presses and arm extenions. boy that was fun!
We did these windmill type things where you hold the kettlebell up with one hand straight in the air, lean over and grab a second kettlebell, life it, then back down.
While laying on the floor and hold a kettle bell up (and not moving it), we had to sit up. if you think it sounds easy.. you're WRONG.
I think I'll always forget things that we did. That's just how I am. The memory fails me all the time.
While we were stretching after we were finished, one of the other newbies asked, "what should we be doing between now and friday?" Apparently she didn't listen on Monday b/c we were told. We were told that for the first week, we should just do bootcamp. After that, do cardio on our days off. Anyway, after being asked that, the instructor gave a humored look and said, "nothing. you're gonna be hurtin' tomorrow."
Hell, I've been hurting all day!

Having doubts
I seriously need to go to bed, but I'm having major doubts about tomorrow. Can I do it? Is this really something I should be doing? Will I just go back to how I was?
It seems as though going to the gym and working out has consumed my life. I go most days (I went today even!) Is that what "normal" people do? Is it worth it?
I know all the answers to these questions, but man... Sometimes it just scares me. It's such a huge change.
Change is hard.

Ouch!
I'm soooo sore today. Not sore in the places I was when I worked with the personal trainer either! Kinda took me off guard!

"pretend you're picking something up with your breasts"
so today was bootcamp day #1. got there early... the lady who runs it is soooo nice. i really like her. i thought MAYBE she was 35, but didn't peg her to have a 26 year old and a 15 year old! i expected her to be more rough based on her pics on the website, but she's not. she's so nice.
there are 4 new people in the class (and about 15 returning). the first week, they are separating us. (or maybe just the first 2 days, i'm not sure.) so the 4 of us were outside... we did a warm up (errr... that was a WORKOUT, not a warm up!) and then did our sets for the day. lots of pushups, lots of squats, lots of lunges. lots of crunches.
i can't do pushups. i just can't. one of the things i've heard is that by the end of bootcamp, everyone can do them. i really am looking forward to that. anyway, while doing modified pushups (on my knees, as the others were, too), i was struggling. the instructor came over to me and said, "pretend you're picking something up with your breasts" hahaha! fortunately, they're understanding that it might not be possible for us to all go all the way down. in addition to the normal pushups, we had to make a diamond with our hands and go down. then we had to extend our arms and do it. oy!
we did those running in place things where you have your hands on the ground... laying on your back and doing bicycling while alternating elbows to knees... superman!! (lay on your stomach and lift up your arms/legs like you're superman flying)
worked with those bands to do arm curls, too. the bands where you hold it down with your feet. i'm sure there are plenty of more things we can do.
we did jumping jacks, running in place while doing knee lifts... so much more i know i'm forgetting.
anyway, it was HARD. i was sweating like a pig. didn't help that i lost my hair thing early on and there was 98% humidity. i was able to do most of everything, so that was good. i did some things slower than others (though they don't mind... it's not a scary bootcamp where they tell you to push push push until you drop). but i still did them!
i got pretty queasy toward the end, but no puke. the instructor said most of the people who throw up are men they can't handle going from strenght to cardio and back. she said it's mostly fit men... ones you wouldn't expect. so that was nice.
i've learned that a banana is NOT a good option for me to eat before bootcamp though. i'll try something different on wednesday.
i don't think i'll be too sore, thankfully. i have a ton of energy today, but that could be from the 20oz mountain dew that i had on the way there, too. (B1 woke up for about 2 hours last night! and B2 woke up, too)
two of the returning people were BIG. they're a couple and i give them great kudos for going. if i weighed that much, i don't think i could do it. hell, they could probably run circles around me right now
one of the other new people was a little big... smaller than me, but still big. the other was skinny (though apparently not in THAT great of shape!) and the other an older lady.
the instructor who worked with the bands with us wasn't as nice as the other. they both are the owners and might be married? not really sure. anyway... i don't think he's mean, he's just not friendly.
when we started working with the bands, i chose the medium one. we got to one exercise and i couldn't do it, so i went to get another.. he insisted that i COULD and came to help me. um, ok... then found that i couldn't. uh yeah, dude.. i'm not being a wimp. i just can't do it like that. i don't know if has an attitude or if he's just the strong silent type. his blue eyes are piercing though and made me uneasy. He was in the military for 20+ years... so yeah. that's where the bootcamp aspect comes in, I guess.
the nice instructor won't be there wednesday so i'm a bit nervous.
i really don't know how well i'm goign to do with this. part of me screams, "of COURSE you can do it!" the other is screaming, "are you NUTS??"
one thing i DO know is that i'm tired of looking like i do. so if that means i need to do bootcamp to jumpstart things, that's the way it'll be!
one nice thing is that bootcamp also incorporates healthy eating. they gave us tons of info and next week there's a meeting with a dietician (monday night... got a sitter!) i *think* the dietician is the personal trainer i was working with! she's just awesome.
ok, enough for today. :D

Yesterday's ass kicking
From 7/16/2008
Yesterday was the last day of working out with my PT before bootcamp starts. i totally love my PT. she's awesome, despite kicking my ass.
This is what we did yesterday in the 95* heat...
Using one of those step aerobics steps with 3 levels up, I had to put one foot on it, down into a squat, up and lift the knee. 15 of those, then repeat on the other side.
run over that damn thing in increments of 30, 45 and 60 seconds.
laid down on the steps facing up, then she'd drop a medicine ball and i'd have to catch it and throw it back to her.
take the medicine ball and lift it over my head
lawnmower style lift things with the medicine ball
while shuffling, throw that damn medicine ball back and forth.
crunches (way more than before!)
alternating side crunches (she wanted me to lift the medicine ball high while doing the side ones, but that just was NOT happening)
i know there were 2 other things... but i can't remember them off the top of my head.
We repeated all of this 3 times.
No wonder I skipped out early on zumba!!
Last night, DH suggested that after bootcamp, i work with her again to help maintain and get back to a new schedule/level. so i get to work with her again. he was sooo gung ho last night. it made me feel good.

a week before bootcamp
From 7/14/2008
this week i'm going to step it up a notch. today i'm going to a "cardio special" class from 5:30-6:30, which i've heard is "bootcamp style".
tomorrow i meet for the last time with my personal trainer and do zumba. (i LOVE zumba... have i ever said that before? )
Wednesday I'm doing the gym's (only) bootcamp class.
Thursday I'm taking off... Friday is Zumba. If I do anything on Saturday, it'll just be some cardio on a machine. Nothing on Sunday to rest up for Monday. plus it's my birthday.
Update: I skipped out on the Boot Camp class at the Y.

Today's PT session (and zumba)
From 7/8/2008
oh.my.god. she KILLED me today.
i get there and she tells me to go warm up... as i'm warming up, we discuss what i should continue to do once bootcamp starts. once i'm done she tell me the bad news. "i figured since bootcamp is mostly outside, we're going outside today"
first of all, i'm going to bootcamp at 6:30AM!! NOT 5PM!!! NOT when it's 92* outside!!!
ok. so we go outside. I'm not sure I can remember everything she made me do... just the horrible stuff.
we get outside and she hands me a kettle bell. makes me do squats and lunges with that damn thing while swinging it around. i also had to do arm stuff with them.
THEN. OMG. she made me do shuttle runs. after my shuttle runs, i had to run up some stairs, do 15 jumping jacks, run back down the stairs and have to run up and down the curb. then we have to "shuffle" (which is NOT a slow walk!) back to the beginning.
Then we started all over again. After that, we went back inside and she made me to tons of crunches of all kinds. :stars:
Then I went to zumba for an hour.
One thing that made me feel good... As I was doing the crunches, i told her, "i should've waited to sign up for bootcamp until today! i don't know if i can do it after all this!"
her response? "you DID do it! you're done. granted, bootcamp will be 15 minutes longer, but you can totally do it"
I felt like a little kid who got a big star on her test in school

my before pics
From 7/8/2008
less than 2 weeks until bootcamp begins and this is what i look like now. i plan to take pics again after the 1st session of bootcamp ends.
i chose the pic that shows the most curves. other pics i think i look better in, but i feel that this one is a more true representation. plus, it shows the places that truly disgust me.
oh, and apparently i can't put my shirts on properly

i feel like Hubby doesn't really care how much effort i'm putting into this. he's supportive in that he's fine with me doing it (and spending the money), but he doesn't say anything about it really. he asked me tuesday after i met with the PT then did zumba how i felt. but that was it.
i don't know... i guess i just want some encouragement.
physically i can already tell a difference. today i went to the gym to do a hip hop aerobics class and no one showed up. so i went to work out on my own. i was able to do my cardio a lot longer/easier than before. that made me feel really good. after my cardio, i did a bunch of the things the PT and i worked on and some off her list (for strength).
i guess i just wish he was more into it. not saying that he has to be my fulltime cheerleader, but i was trying to figure out what to do on which days and he said he'd help... but then he got too interested in something on tv.

I think this is what we did tonight. I might be leaving out a thing or two... this was in 30 minutes
Squats w/ ball – lean ball against the wall, place at mid-lower back.. feet out and squat.
Butterfly. Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. Weights and arms up, butt out, bend forward and FLY!! Move arms up and down.
Steps! Run up and down 1 step. Lead with right foot, then lead with left.
Wall push ups.
Boxing moves… jab, jab (repeat) cut, cut (repeat) combination: jab, jab, cut, cut (need partner)
Elbow jabs… Partner stands behind, jab pads with elbows.
Lunges, jumps and squats, oh my! Lunge, on the upswing jump into a squat. Repeat.
Crunches.
Crunches and punches. Punch opposite site as sitting up for crunches. (need partner to hold legs down and hold punching things)
Lower back ball things. Lay on a ball, do backwards sit ups.
Leg pushing horribleness. Lay on back, grab partner’s ankles. Legs straight up. Partner pushes your legs, you bring them back to partner’s hands.

i meet with the PT two more times before i start bootcamp. next tuesday, then the tuesday after that. she's going to email me some exercises, too.
tomorrow it's yoga at 6:30 while Hubby watches the kids and cooks dinner.
thursday i'll do some of the exercises we did today. i can't decide if i want to do Hip Hop Aerobics or pilates/stretch yoga class... or both.
i think that soon i'll be able to do a lot more of the classes that the Y offers, so that'll be cool.

oh.my.god. i've lost my mind.

30 minutes with the personal trainer... who told me when i got there that she wasn't going to be nice. she knows i'm doing the bootcamp, so she said she wants to do as much as she can with me to get me prepared. she KICKED.MY.ASS.
THEN! an hour of zumba.
i'm beat.
I DO like it though. i'm exhausted, but it's such a good feeling. plus, if i want to eat something not so wonderful for me, i feel less guilty about it.
but yeah, i do like it. i'm really looking forward to bootcamp, actually. my PT said i can totally do it.
my background with exercise is pretty much nothing. i mean, here and there i'd work out... but i'd always stop for one reason or another. i'm hoping this time will be the difference. i think b/c of the kids, i'm more likely to stick with it.
in high school i was pretty fit, but sheesh. i'm old now.

First day with my personal trainer...
From 7/1/2008
less than 2 hours until i meet her and i'm VERY nervous! on the bright side, i've started to be able to notice a SLIGHT difference in how my pants are fitting. that's always a nice boost! wish it hadn't taken so long b/c i was getting discouraged!!
one issue i have is that i forget to eat breakfast soemtimes b/c of chasing after the kids... naptime rolls around and i haven't eaten all day. not a good thing. so i've been making smoothie shakey things with slimfast. sounds gross, but they taste pretty good! i'm not do the "slimfast diet" i'm just using this to help me eat and not snack. after the meeting with my personal trainer, it's off to zumba!!

gearing up...
From 6/25/2008
I am waking up WAAAY too early to go work out in the mornings. I figure it'll get me ready for bootcamp. Plus, I don't have to drag the kids along.
Hubby said that i can work with a personal trainer for 2-3 sessions to help me get ready for bootcamp. b/c as it is now, i'd kill myself. the sessions are around $30 (for 30min)... Forunately, he's tutoring a few days a week, so that can pay for it. he's so good to me.
I start working with the PT next Tuesday at 5pm. We'll do once a week until bootcamp! zumba is on tuesdays at 5:30, so i think i'll go after my PT session. apparently, i feel like killing myself!
still scared. still don't know if i can do this. but i'm going to try my hardest!!
i don't think i can really express how scared i am.

I've become the fat girl
From 6/13/2008
I realized yesterday that I'm "the fat girl" now.
In Zumba class tonight, I was the biggest one there (and always am). As I watched myself in the mirror, I realized that the moves I was making weren't nearly that of the others in the class. I looked like I was barely working out, but I was actually working up quite a sweat.
I guess it's good that I'm doing it, but man... when you realize that you look differently than you've always pictured yourself, it can be a slap in the face.
i have a goal...
by July 21st (the day after my 31st birthday), i hope to start a boot camp that runs for 4 weeks. I'd go either 2 or 3 days per week before the kids get up. it's only 45 minutes each day, but it's VERY intense. eek.
so pretty much, I have to train to go to boot camp! how pathetic! but anyway... that's my goal. Hubby is on board. I'm SCARED.
last night, i was emailing with the boot camp lady and she says it's doable... there are plenty of people who are around my weight or more (and of course, less).
i'm SCARED. did i say that already?
